GRAPPE VARIETIES
The conservation of Corsican Grape types
VERMENTINO
A rare, splendid and puzzling grape variety
The Vermentino is king in the peculiar Corsican climate crafted by mountains and seashore closeness. It is the perfect environment to achieve exceptional white wines. The Vermentino grape type has been cultivated in Corsica since the antiquity. It is characterised by conic grape shape with rose-amber berries. The common notes are light, refreshing and fruity.
This iconic Mediterranean shoreline white grape type is magnified by the Campo Maggiore Terroir. It evolves from a common fruity light wine to a complex nose of white flowers with maquis and bitter almond. The South wind that shovels into the valley crystallises a light salinity on the outer skin of the berry that gives a unique saline aftertaste. |
NIELLUCCIU
The AOC Patrimonio flagship grape variety
The Sangiovese or Niellucciu in Corsica is the emblematic grape type of Tuscany’s great vintages. It needs careful attention from the culture to the vinification, but if worked with panache it produces the most refined, equilibrate and of great aging potential wines.
A small yield and an over-maturation of the berries are keys to succeed in the growing of the Sangiovese in order to enhance grape potential. The Sangiovese enjoys high fluctuation between day and night temperatures and if this is the case it gives the most aromatic spicy red cherry notes. The Guissani Paoli tannins are powerful; yet the specificities of both the microclimate and terroir makes a balance between astringency and velvet on the palate. Back at the Genoan empire, all of the Patrimonio wine production was shipped to delight its nobility. |
ROSSOLA BIANCA
The Rossola Bianca (cousin of l’Ugni Blanc or Trebbiano) is a grape type characterised by strong nervosity and acidity. It produces large grapes that are elongated like a foxtail. The star grape type of Cognac grows well on the Campo Maggiore soil. The Rossola Bianca brings freshness and delicacy to wines in assemblages. It sublimates wines to make them stand out.
